Supplies
scissors, hot glue, permanent markers, ruler, burlap roll, twigs, lighter
Step 1: Measure the burlap (paper or whatever you decided to use)
We used the ruler and measured a piece of the burlap, about 7 feet long. Even though we only made our height chart 6 feet tall, we needed a little extra on both ends to wrap around the twig.
TIP: In hindsight we could have only done about a 4 foot one, considering my daughter is the youngest and she's already over two feet tall. And it would keep the chart from hanging down to the floor, tempting the little ones to play with it. Food for thought!
Step 2: Wrap one of the Ends with burlap and hot glue
We started from the top down, you could start at either end, just keep in mind you only have about a foot give or take to use, to wrap around the twig in both places, so approximately 6 inches at the top and 6 at the bottom. We started at the top and wrap about 2 inches around the twig, stopping to glue each time the burlap went around.
Step 3: Measure and Mark each foot
Start at the end you just hot glued to the twig, use the ruler, measure and mark off each foot. We made our footmarks as long as the ruler was wide. After you measure out all 6 feet, you will see how much burlap you have remaining to use to wrap around the end/top (depending on where you started).
At this point, you can trim it down if you need to.
Step 4: Wrap the other End with burlap and hot glue
After doing the top, you should have a pretty good idea of how much burlap you really need to wrap around the twig. We used about 2 inches at the top and bottom.
Step 5: Add the Inch Marks & Numbers (if you want)
We used our permanent markers to make the inch marks, we used the ruler to make sure they were all relatively the same size, which was about half the size of the ruler. Them we added our foot numbers. You can get creative here, you could even use paint instead of markers. I would have like to do more with the numbers but started getting pressed for time. We did all of this while my two-year-old was napping!
Step 6: Add a Ribbon to Hang It
I used some leftover ribbon from something or another and added it to the top of the height chart, to hang it.
Step 7: Decorate Clothes Pins
I absolutely love clothespins. Plus, I have a ton of them left over from my little baby shower. They have been sitting around for over 2 years now! I use them any chance I get. I used permanent markers to decorate them, with the kid's names and ages on them.
TIP: Put the date and height on the back, just in case the pins get moved around! Like that's never going to happen!
I hope you guys enjoy my frugal craft!
